Rosa das Rosas:
Songs of the Virgin Mary
The centuries-old Marian repertoire of Medieval Europe features a variety of styles – beautiful melodies, intricate polyphony, and boisterous dances – honoring and celebrating the Virgin. The Spanish tradition featured in this program is particularly rich: pilgrim songs from the Llibre Vermell de Montseratt; songs and hymns from Cantigas de Santa Maria from the court of Alfonso X; works from the Huelgas Codex prepared for the nuns of the convent of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas; Villancicos and other fifteenth century works.
Particularly well-suited to perform this music, the Medieval vocal and instrumental ensemble Alkemie (David McCormick and Niccolo Seligmann, vielle; Tracy Cowart, voice and harp; Elena Mullins, voice; Sian Ricketts, voice and recorder) creates an exciting musical experience grounded in historical performance practice and spiced with its dedication to experimentation within the medieval tradition. See here for more about the ensemble and its members.
