Continental Connections: A Musical Tour of Renaissance England and Europe

A Mixed Ensemble Workshop

with Camerata Transcontinental
for Recorders, Lutes, Viols, & Sundry Instruments

May 11, 2024 | 9:30-4:30
Saint George’s Episcopal Church
915 N. Oakland | Arlington, VA

Western composers were on the move in the 16th century, crisscrossing England and the Continent to study with celebrated mentors and accompany royal retinues to political summits, weddings, and military campaigns.  As they encountered musical masters and colleagues in faraway places, they blended styles, reveling in innovation.  Spreading their passion, the sudden explosion of music printing in Pettruci’s Venice led to mass-circulation, paving the way for music publishing across Europe and later to England.  This was a pathbreaking, seminal period in western music history.

Join master teachers of the Camerata Transcontinental (Tish Berlin, Frances Blaker, Larry Lipnik, Amy Domingues, and Ronn McFarlane) with your recorder, viol and lute on a journey through the sumptuous repertoire of the 16th century, exploring the iconic genres and masterpieces of its most influential composers:  Josquin, Lassus, de Monte, Dowland, Marenzio, Gabrieli, Byrd, and others.  Follow in the footsteps of Franco-Flemish creators transported to Italy, France, and England, and English composers venturing to Germany, Italy, and Denmark.  The journey awaits you!

Open to intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced players of recorder, lute, viol and other compatible instruments.

Schedule: The day will be divided into four class periods with mid-morning, lunch, and mid-afternoon breaks. Classes will include Recorder and Viol consorts, mixed instrument ensembles, and culminate in an all-workshop play-in. The Lutes will work in all lute ensembles in the first three periods.

Workshop Pitch A=440.
Music will be provided in advance.
