Playing in the “Modern” Style
A Workshop for Baroque Ensembles Focusing on 17th Century Music
with the Members of In Stile Moderno
Musicians of the 17th century, moving away from the polyphonic ‘Stile Antico,’ began to embrace a ‘Stile Moderno.’ Spend the day exploring music of this period and perfecting your ensemble technique with the expert members of In Stile Moderno (Agnes Coakley Cox, Nathaniel Cox, Dan Meyers, and Cameron Welke). Come with your own baroque ensemble or we’ll match you up.
Saturday, May 17, 9:30 am- 4:30 pm
Saint George’s Episcopal Church | 915 N. Oakland | Arlington, VA
Singers, Recorders, Cornettos, Flutes, Oboes, Violins, Violas, Harpsichords, Cellos, Violas da Gamba, Baroque Guitars, Archlutes, and Theorbos. . . . even Renaissance lutes. We welcome advanced and upper intermediate singers and instrumentalists who are comfortable playing one on a part, and are experienced ensemble players. Ensembles may be at either A= 415 or 440.
When registering for the workshop, let us know about your playing experience. We’ll use this information to form compatible ensembles and notify you of your placement after registration closes. We anticipate forming four or five ensembles of three to five performers each. Depending on the instrument mix among registrants, we may have, in addition to traditional baroque ensembles, an all-recorder ensemble with continuo played by a bass recorder or an ensemble at A= 440 playing early baroque music which lutenists in renaissance tuning are welcome to join. We will provide music for your ensemble, including tablature for lutenists, or, if you wish, your ensemble may choose its own piece to be coached on.
The day will be divided into four or five class sessions with a lunch break and breaks between classes. The first class is a presentation by the ensemble illustrating the elements of ‘Stile Moderno’ and answering the question, “What is ‘In Stile Moderno’?”
In the following sessions, each student ensemble will have three coaching sessions, with each session led by a different member of In Stile Moderno. You will play with the same ensemble throughout the workshop. Depending on the number of registrant ensembles, the schedule may also include a session for practice or auditing another class.
Apply early! After APRIL 26, we will form ensembles and will accept registrations after that date only on a space-available basis.
