Mixed Ensembles for Lutes and Viols

A Workshop Exploring 16th Century Polyphony
with Paul O’Dette and Ronn McFarlane

Saturday, October 11, 2025, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
Saint George’s Episcopal Church
915 N. Oakland, Arlington, VA

This workshop offers a remarkable exploration of Renaissance music from Italy, France, and Germany, featuring masterpieces from the 1500s such as Adrian Willaert’s madrigal Madonna io non lo so, Giulio Segni da Modena’s Ricercar Quintus, and Bartolomeo Tromboncino’s Ave Maria. We will also have a generous selection of light-hearted frottole from the court of Isabella d’Este of Mantua.

This is a rare opportunity for coaching from two exceptional performers, allowing participants to delve deeper into the nuances of historical performance practices.

Participants
The workshop is open to intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced players of lutes and viols. All ensembles will be at A= 440

Auditors
This workshop is also open to a limited number of auditors. Auditors will attend classes but not participate. This is a chance to see two great teachers at work!

Schedule
The day will be divided into two morning classes, a lunch break, and two afternoon classes, finishing with a tutti session at the end of the day. Participants will be divided into two consorts of mixed Lutes and Viols. The teachers will alternate between the consorts.

Music will be provided as soon as you register. All lute parts will be in tablature.
